Osagyefo Nkrumah: Why Every President Wants His Legacy ‎

A Founder's Day tribute
On September 21, Ghana pauses to honour Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, born in 1909. This year the government declared Monday a statutory public holiday, and Founder's Day is observed nationwide.

It is a day to celebrate a leader who carried the Gold Coast to independence on March 6, 1957. It is also a day to ask why, decades later, presidents of every stripe still reach for his name.

The man who dared first
Nkrumah led Ghana to become the first sub-Saharan African country to break free from colonial rule. That act changed more than a flag. It told millions across the continent that self-rule was possible.

He also refused to treat Ghana's freedom as the end of the journey. He is remembered as Africa's foremost champion of continental unity and the liberation of Black people everywhere, and Accra became a meeting point for freedom movements.

A holiday that keeps changing hands
Nkrumah's memory has been shaped by legislation as much as by history. In September 2009, President John Atta Mills declared September 21, the centenary of Nkrumah's birth, a statutory holiday. In March 2019, a new law made August 4 "Founders' Day" and kept September 21 as a separate Memorial Day.

In June 2025, Parliament restored July 1 as Republic Day, removed August 4 from the holiday calendar, and reinstated September 21 as Founder's Day. Governments have argued over the calendar, but none has tried to erase him.

Why presidents reach for him
This is my analysis, not a settled finding, but several reasons stand out.

He is the founding story. A leader who invokes Nkrumah invokes the origin of the nation itself.

Pan-Africanism gives leaders a continental voice. President John Mahama said Nkrumah's vision remains relevant to Ghana's future. He has also urged new envoys to carry Nkrumah's legacy of Pan-African leadership.

He lends legitimacy. Standing beside the founder gives any government borrowed authority.Every camp claims him.

The Convention People's Party, which he founded, called on the state to protect and revive state-owned enterprises to honour him. Across parties, his name is used to make a case.

Why he matters now
In a region where the Sahel is under strain, where insecurity tests borders, and where young Africans ask whether their nations can stand on their own feet, the questions Nkrumah raised are still ours. How do we build economies that serve our own people? How do we cooperate across borders rather than compete? How do we stand as Africans, with dignity, in a world that too often decides for us?

A fuller remembrance
A real tribute does not need to pretend the story is simple. Nkrumah's rule also drew serious criticism, and he was overthrown in 1966. Honouring him well means learning from all of it: the courage that won independence, the hope of African unity, and the lessons about power that every generation of leaders must remember.

The work that remains
Quoting Nkrumah is easy. Honouring him is harder. It means schools that give children a fair start, institutions that serve citizens, and a Ghana that keeps faith with its founding promise of freedom and justice. If every president wants his legacy, the real test is whether they deliver the work that earned it.
