36 suspects arrested over lynching of police officer at Gindabour

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 people in connection with the mob attack at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region that resulted in the death of a police officer.

The deceased officer, General Constable Redeemer Owusu, was killed on Wednesday, September 16, after he and other members of a patrol team were attacked while responding to an incident involving a motorbike rider.

The Police said the officers were on highway patrol along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road when they spotted a motorbike rider approaching them.

According to the Police, the rider suddenly veered off the road and entered the bush after seeing the patrol vehicle, raising the officers’ suspicion.

The officers followed from another direction and later found the rider unconscious on a bush road.

They picked him up and began transporting him to a hospital, but he died while they were on the way.

The Police said tensions rose in the community after residents learned about the rider’s death, leading to an attack on the officers.

General Constable Owusu was lynched during the attack, while the other officers suffered injuries of varying degrees. The police vehicle was also damaged by the mob.

The remains of the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have been deposited at the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to Gindabour to assist with investigations and identify those responsible for the attack.

Additional personnel from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, together with the Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to reinforce security in the area and maintain law and order.

The 36 suspects arrested remain in Police custody and are assisting with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned before the court after the investigations.

The Regional Police Command has condemned the attack and assured that persons found culpable would face “the full rigours of the law.”
