Pay only GH¢3 — Ho MCE rejects reported GH¢5 tricycle fare increase

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ho, Hon. Stephen Adom, has rejected reports that tricycle operators, popularly known as “Can Do”, in the Ho Municipality have increased their fares from GH¢3.00 to GH¢5.00 effective Monday, September 7, 2026.

The MCE’s reaction follows the circulation of two fare lists purported to be an “Authorized and Approved Price List - Ho - Zone” issued by the National Union of Tricycle Operators, Ghana (NUTOG), and signed by its Zonal Secretary, Xefu Benjamin.

The lists, which reportedly took effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, contained revised fares for various routes within the Ho Municipality.

Under one of the lists, fares from Civic Centre to Market were set at GH¢4.00, while journeys to SDA/Depo/Somey, Fiave/Da Abra/Kokompe and Barracks were pegged at GH¢5.00 each. The fare to Barracks Newtown was listed at GH¢5.50, Poly/HTU at GH¢4.50, UHAS and Sonrise at GH¢10.00 each, and Mawuko Land at GH¢7.00, among others.

The broader Ho-zone list also indicated fares from Market to Housing/Dome and Guinness at GH¢4.00 each, Polyclinic and Desiadenyo at GH¢5.00 each, Titrinu at GH¢6.00, Sonrise School and New Stadium at GH¢10.00 each, and Sokode-Gborgame and Sokode-Etoe at GH¢8.00 each.

The fare from Market to UHAS was listed at GH¢12.00, while other routes ranged between GH¢4.00 and GH¢10.00.

However, in a statement signed on his behalf by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Henry Yao Avenonmeku, Hon. Stephen Adom said the Ho Municipal Assembly neither supports nor endorses the reported fare increase.

He described the purported adjustment as unacceptable, stressing that no consultation had been held with, or approval obtained from, the appropriate authorities to justify the new fares.

The Assembly said it was engaging relevant stakeholders, including representatives of the tricycle operators, to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported fare changes and find an amicable solution that protects the interests of both operators and commuters.

In the meantime, commuters and members of the general public have been advised not to pay the reported GH¢5.00 fare but to continue paying the existing GH¢3.00 fare until any new fare is officially approved and communicated by the appropriate authorities.

The MCE also urged tricycle operators to refrain from imposing the reported increase and exercise restraint, warning that unilateral fare adjustments could create unnecessary tension and impose additional hardship on commuters.

The Ho Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a fair and orderly transport system that addresses the legitimate concerns of transport operators while protecting the welfare and interests of residents and commuters.

The Assembly assured the public that further updates would be provided following its ongoing engagements with stakeholders.
