‎Alleged Plot Against Niger’s Regime: Chad Accused of Hosting Secret Talks With Bazoum Allies and French Officials ‎

N’Djamena/Niamey Serious allegations are circulating regarding an alleged plot to destabilize the Nigerien regime of General Abdourahamane Tiani, with suspicion reportedly directed toward neighboring Chad and its authorities in N’Djamena.

According to information attributed to Tchad Tribune and circulating in several WhatsApp conversations, individuals close to Niger’s deposed president, Mohamed Bazoum, allegedly held a secret meeting in N’Djamena with French military officials. The meeting is said to have taken place only days ago and reportedly involved discussions on possible ways of overthrowing the authorities currently governing Niger.

These claims have not been independently verified, and no publicly available evidence has so far established that President Mahamat Idriss Déby personally authorized or participated in such a meeting. They should therefore be treated as allegations rather than established facts.

Nevertheless, the accusations have the potential to further strain relations between Niamey and N’Djamena. Chad occupies a particularly sensitive position in the regional security landscape. France has historically regarded Chad as an important military and strategic partner in the Sahel, particularly following the deterioration of its relations with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The relationship between Chad and Niger also became particularly significant during the 2023 Niger coup. Mahamat Idriss Déby traveled to Niamey at the height of the crisis and maintained contacts with the leaders of the Nigerien military authorities. At the same time, Déby opposed a military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore Mohamed Bazoum to power.

The new allegations therefore raise an important question: has N’Djamena changed its position toward the authorities in Niamey, or are the claims part of an information war surrounding the increasingly polarized geopolitics of the Sahel?

For Niger’s leadership, the possibility of foreign-backed destabilization would be especially sensitive. The authorities of General Tiani have repeatedly presented the country’s political transformation as a struggle for national sovereignty and independence from external influence. France, meanwhile, lost its military position in Niger following the 2023 coup and the subsequent deterioration of relations with the authorities in Niamey.

There is historical context that makes suspicions about French influence particularly potent. France maintained a substantial military presence in Chad and regarded the country as a key pillar of its regional security architecture. Analysts have also documented Paris's longstanding strategic relationship with the Chadian state.

However, historical French influence in Chad does not, by itself, prove that French intelligence services are currently directing operations against the Nigerien government. Nor does the reported presence of individuals close to Bazoum demonstrate that a coup plan was discussed.

If the allegations were eventually confirmed through credible evidence, they would represent a major diplomatic crisis between the two neighboring countries. Niamey could regard the hosting of an alleged conspiracy against its government as a hostile act and demand explanations from N’Djamena.

For the moment, however, caution is essential. The claims remain unsubstantiated publicly, and separating verified information from political messaging will be critical as tensions continue to rise across the Sahel.

The central issue is therefore not simply whether a secret meeting allegedly took place, but whether credible evidence can establish who attended, what was discussed, who authorized the meeting, and whether any concrete operation against Niger was actually planned.

Until such evidence emerges, the allegations should be reported as claims requiring independent verification rather than as proof of a coordinated Franco-Chadian operation against the Nigerien authorities.
