'You'll be dismissed if you come to work smelling alcohol' — Bagbin warns parliamentary security officers

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has cautioned newly recruited parliamentary security officers against reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol, warning that offenders will face disciplinary measures, including dismissal for repeated violations.

Mr Bagbin issued the warning on Friday, August 29, 2026, during the passing-out ceremony for 69 newly recruited parliamentary assistant security guards.

He urged the officers to uphold discipline, professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility as they take on the task of protecting Parliament and its precincts.

The Speaker advised the recruits to keep their social activities separate from their official duties, stressing that security personnel must remain disciplined and alert at all times.

He also charged them to maintain a high level of vigilance and strictly enforce access-control measures and other security protocols to safeguard the Parliamentary precincts.

Mr Bagbin warned that any officer found reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol would be disciplined, with a third offence resulting in dismissal.

“No alcoholism. Once we come and we smell alcohol from you, I can assure you, you'll be disciplined. And on the third occasion, you'll be booted out. The protection of our democracy begins with the yielding discipline of those tasked to guard its pillars,” he said.

The Speaker urged the newly recruited officers to recognise the importance of their responsibilities and conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the dignity and security requirements of Parliament.
