The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that controlled water spillage from Burkina Faso’s Bagré Dam will begin on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The spillage is expected to affect communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas in Ghana.

The WRC said the decision follows a rise in the reservoir level of the dam, which is currently close to its normal operating level.

“The current water level of the Bagré Dam as of Thursday August 27, 2026 is 234.64 metres and the filling rate of the dam is 95.19%; reservoir level is 0.36 metres below the normal reservoir level (235.0 metres),” the Commission said in a press release.

According to the WRC, SONABEL, the operator of the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso, has scheduled the commencement of the controlled spillage for 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28.

The Commission urged residents and other stakeholders in potentially affected areas to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.

“Communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas are advised to take the necessary precautions and adhere to safety guidelines, directives and advisories issued by the LOCAL ASSEMBLIES and the APPROPRIATE AGENCIES,” it added.

The WRC said the notice was based on information received from SONABEL on the current reservoir level of the dam.

Residents in communities along the White Volta and adjoining areas have therefore been advised to remain alert and follow directives from local assemblies and relevant agencies.
