'I promise you well-researched dossier for all my debates; offer different lens to things you may not see' — Afenyo tells Agalga

Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged to work constructively with the new Majority Leader, James Agalga, while making it clear that his ultimate political goal is to turn the Minority Caucus into the Majority.

Mr Afenyo-Markin made the remarks on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following Mr Agalga’s formal assumption of the Majority Leader position.

He assured his new counterpart that he would not seek to obstruct the work of the Majority but would provide alternative perspectives on government policies and decisions.

“I am saying that you can find in me a friend. My job is not to obstruct you. My job is to offer a different lens to things you may not see,” he said.

The Minority Leader also promised to subject government business to rigorous scrutiny and approach parliamentary debates with detailed research.

“I can promise you a well-researched dossier for all my debates. That I can promise you,” he added.

Despite the conciliatory message, Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that his responsibilities as Minority Leader remained firmly rooted in strengthening the Minority Caucus and positioning it to become the Majority.

“My job really, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority. That really is my job,” he stressed.

He also cautioned Mr Agalga against any attempt to weaken or infiltrate the Minority Caucus as he begins his tenure as Majority Leader.

Mr Agalga assumed the Majority Leader position following a communication from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin announcing changes to the leadership of the NDC Parliamentary Caucus.

The reshuffle followed the nomination of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
