“I’ll See You in Court”: Afenyo‑Markin Fires Back at GoldBod CEO

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, says he will pursue legal action over what he describes as false and defamatory statements made against him by GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.

The Effutu MP’s decision follows Mr Gyamfi’s public accusation that he is an “extortionist,” a claim the GoldBod CEO insisted he was prepared to defend in court. Mr Gyamfi said his description of the Minority Leader stemmed from circumstances surrounding their exchanges over the Minority’s scrutiny of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, August 22, 2026, Afenyo‑Markin said he would activate the appropriate legal channels to address the allegations.

“On the defamatory statements made against me personally, I intend to pursue the appropriate legal remedies,” he wrote.

He dismissed suggestions that his scrutiny of GoldBod and the central bank’s gold‑trading programme was driven by improper motives, stressing that his actions were rooted in his constitutional mandate.

“As Minority Leader in Parliament, my responsibility is to help Parliament discharge its constitutional oversight function. My actions have been guided solely by that responsibility,” he said.

Afenyo‑Markin insisted he had neither acted out of personal interest nor conducted himself inappropriately in the performance of his duties. He accused those uncomfortable with legitimate oversight of resorting to personal attacks to distract from substantive issues.

“I recognise that, in public life, those who are uncomfortable with legitimate scrutiny may push back,” he said.

“In some cases, they may resort to false allegations, personal attacks and ridicule in an effort to shift attention from the substantive issues and make the person asking the questions the subject of controversy.”

Despite the attacks, the Minority Leader said he remains focused on the core issues surrounding the gold‑trading programme.

“Meanwhile, my attention, and that of the Caucus I lead, remains firmly focused on the programme, the decisions taken and the public funds involved,” he said.
