Alfred Sakyi elected Lay President of Methodist Church Ghana to take over from Attah-Antwi

The 52nd Conference of The Methodist Church Ghana has through a standing vote endorsed the election of Alfred Sakyi, a former Lay Chairman of the Tema Diocese, as the next Lay President of the church.

He will take over from Mr Kwasi Attah-Antwi, whose term of office ends this year.

Mr Alfred Sakyi, along side others was nominated in the first round of votes by the  delegates attending the conference, which is the highest decision-making body of the church and held biannually.

He garnered 186 votes as against 79 by the closest nominee, Agatha Ennin Osei.

By the constitution of the church, since none of the other nominees obtained over 50 votes, there should have been a second round of vote, as explained by the Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev Professor Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu.

However, a few minutes after that announcement, Most Rev Professor Asamoah-Gyadu, informed the delegates that Agatha Ennin Osei, had conceded defeat making way for the Conference to endorse Mr Sakyi through a standing vote.

The Presiding Bishop afterwards declared Me Sakyi as Lay President-elect of the church. 

The Lay President of the Methodist Church Ghana is the number two person at the hierarchy of the church's administration.
