“Character is who you are when the cameras are off. It’s integrity in the dark.” – Abundant Robert K. AWOLUGUTU
Abraham Lincoln was called “Honest Abe” because he walked miles to return 6 cents to a customer.
In Ghana today: A tricycle rider finds a wallet and returns it. A student refuses to cheat in an exam.
Trust me. These are not small things. These are classic examples of true character.
Question: Who are you when no one is watching?
UNDERSTANDING CHARACTER
Character is not the same as reputation: Your reputation is what people think you are. Your character is who you actually are. Reputation without character is like a mouth without teeth.
Character is Consistency: It takes discipline to build. Same values at work, at home, on WhatsApp, in traffic. They never trade integrity for convenience.
Character is choosing right over easy: You do what is right even when nobody will ever know.
Character is legacy: Skill gets you noticed. Character keeps you there.
WHERE GHANA STRUGGLES WITH CHARACTER
Corruption: It’s been normalized. “Everyone is doing it, so let’s join.” But small cuts become big holes.
The Youth: Cheating in exams is treated as normal. Cutting corners for quick money. We want gains without pain. Results without roots.
Leadership: Loss of public trust. Honest at sunrise, different at sunset.
Business: Sweet talk, overpromising, underdelivering. Fake reviews. Remember: Shortcuts kill brands.
THE COST OF WEAK CHARACTER
For the individual: Loss of respect. Loss of trust. Guilt, fear, and a double life.
For the Family: Children learn more from what we do than what we say. They will model what we live.
For the Nation: We cannot build a strong and stable Ghana on a weak foundation. Buildings fall. We must build character first.
Spiritual: “Whoever is faithful in little will be faithful in much.”- Luke 16:10
HOW TO BUILD CHARACTER
Live by principles, not feelings: Decide your values before pressure comes. Don’t compromise.
Practice honesty in small things: Return found items. Return extra change. Meet small deadlines. Big character is built in small moments.
Surround yourself with people of character: Iron sharpens iron. Choose your circle wisely.
Be accountable: Give a trusted person permission to ask you hard questions.
Guard Your Name: You represent yourself, your family, your community, and your nation. Don’t trade it for a quick win.
CONCLUSION
Talent gets you to prominence. Hard work gets you a promotion.
Character gets you trusted. And trust is the currency of influence.
“Character is who you are when the cameras are off.”
So today: Do what is right even when no one is watching. Build your foundation. See you at the top.
