KMA extends decongestion deadline for Alabar Trading Area to August 24

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has postponed its planned decongestion exercise in the Alabar Trading Area and other affected parts of the metropolis, shifting the date from August 17 to August 24, 2026.

According to a press release issued by the Assembly on August 14, the extension follows an engagement between KMA Management and the leadership of the Alabar Motorcycle Association, led by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Sheriff Ennin.

The Association appealed to the Mayor of Kumasi for additional time to re-organise their activities and address issues contributing to congestion in the area.

The initial exercise was scheduled to cover Alabar, Mbrom, Aboabo Station and Ashtown.

During the meeting, traders assured the Mayor and KMA Management of their commitment to work with the Assembly to restore order.

As part of the agreement, they pledged to discontinue washing of motorcycles on the streets, stop erecting canopies in the middle of the road and operate within clearly defined trading spaces

The traders also requested that the Assembly assist in demarcating the frontage of shops to ensure activities remain within designated areas.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, accepted the request and indicated that the Assembly would return to the area on 24th August 2026 to assess compliance with the agreed measures.

He noted that voluntary compliance would help restore order and also reduce unnecessary costs to the Assembly.

The Assembly is therefore urging all traders, motorcycle sellers, and other operators within the affected areas to honour the commitments made and cooperate fully with the exercise when it takes place.

“KMA remains committed to creating a safe, accessible, clean, and orderly urban environment for residents, businesses, and visitors to Kumasi,” the statement concluded.
