Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will rely on divine guidance rather than personal vengeance in responding to what it describes as the persecution of its members should it return to government.

Speaking to Citi News during the party's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration in Accra on Thursday, August 6, the former Fisheries Minister was asked whether an NPP administration would retaliate against members and supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what the opposition claims is the harassment of its members.

In her response, Ms Koomson said the party would leave any form of vengeance to God and seek His guidance on how to address the situation.

“Vengeance is for the Lord. And God will give us the direction on how we should avenge,” she said.

Her remarks come against the backdrop of claims by the NPP that some of its members have been subjected to intimidation, arrests and politically motivated investigations by state institutions since the change of government.

The "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration formed part of the party's campaign against what it describes as political persecution, selective justice and the misuse of state institutions under the current administration.

According to the NPP, the protest was intended to draw national attention to developments it believes undermine Ghana's democratic values and the rule of law.

Among the issues cited by the party is the acquittal and discharge of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, which it argues raises concerns about the consistency and impartiality of the justice system.

The opposition party has also criticised what it describes as the arbitrary arrest, detention and alleged harassment of several of its members by state investigative and security agencies.
