'Don't underestimate NPP's comeback power' — Anthony Karbo tells NDC

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, has expressed confidence that the party will rebuild and return to power despite its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The NPP lost the election with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate.

Despite campaigning on its ambition to break Ghana's eight-year electoral cycle, the party suffered a heavy defeat, losing the presidential election to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by more than 1.6 million votes.

Nearly two years into opposition, the NPP has accused the John Mahama administration of intimidating its members and applying selective justice.

Speaking in a social media post on Thursday, August 6, during the party's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration, Abayifaa Karbo noted that the NPP had already begun reorganising for a political comeback.

"The NDC thinks this is the end. It's not. It's the intermission," his post read in part.

He stressed that the party has overcome setbacks before and would do so again, urging the ruling NDC not to mistake the current period in opposition for the party's decline.

"We've rebuilt before, and we're already rebuilding again. Underestimate the NPP? That's the oldest mistake in Ghanaian politics," he stressed.

The NPP organised the demonstration in collaboration with other political parties and civil society organisations, saying it was aimed at drawing attention to what it described as growing threats to Ghana's democracy and the rule of law.

According to the party, the protest was triggered by concerns over the Court of Appeal's acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu and what it describes as selective justice under the current administration.

The party has also alleged that some of its members have been arrested over public comments, while individuals affiliated with the governing NDC who allegedly made similar remarks have not faced the same treatment.
