‘I have not seen anything from EOCO’ - Miracles Aboagye reacts to his ‘frozen assets’

Dennis "Miracles" Aboagye says he has not been officially notified by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) about reports that his bank accounts have been frozen and restrictions imposed on some of his landed properties.

Speaking to journalists during the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration in Accra on Thursday, August 6, Mr Aboagye said he was unaware of any such action by the anti-graft agency.

His comments followed questions over reports that EOCO had secured a High Court order freezing his bank accounts and restricting transactions involving some of his landed properties as part of an ongoing investigation.

“I haven't seen anything from EOCO saying that,” he said.

“I really don't know anything about what you're talking about.”

Mr Aboagye maintained that the focus of the day should not be on his personal circumstances but on what the NPP describes as growing threats to Ghana's democratic governance.

According to him, the nationwide demonstration was organised to protest what the party considers attempts to intimidate political opponents and suppress freedom of expression.

He expressed confidence that the protest would be peaceful, noting that Ghana has a long-standing tradition of orderly public demonstrations.

“It'll end peacefully,” he said, adding that “in this country, we've always had peaceful protests.”

Mr Aboagye also stressed that participants had every right to voice their dissatisfaction with the administration of President John Dramani Mahama and return home safely.

He further called on journalists to pay closer attention to what he described as attacks on free speech, arguing that media practitioners themselves had become victims of intimidation.

“You should be worried about what's going on,” he told reporters, saying that concern over freedom of expression was one of the key reasons behind the demonstration.

He alleged that several journalists and bloggers had been harassed under the current administration.

“Some of your colleagues have been molested under this government, especially some of you holding cameras as bloggers. At least, I know four, five bloggers who have been arrested,” he claimed.

Without identifying anyone, Mr Aboagye also alleged that a blogger had been arrested for sharing a video of President Mahama that was already publicly available, describing the action as unjustified.

The government has consistently rejected the allegations underpinning the NPP's "Democracy Under Attack" campaign, insisting that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the constitutional rights of all Ghanaians.
