‘The street is for Bawumia now’ - Aggrieved Ghanaians join NPP 'Democracy Under Attack' demo

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) participating in Thursday's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration expressed optimism about the party's political prospects, with some insisting that public support is shifting in favour of the NPP and its 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking to journalists during the protest, one demonstrator, who described himself as familiar with the political mood on the streets of Accra, rejected suggestions that those taking part in the march were disgruntled party supporters.

“The street is for Bawumia now,” he declared.

“Bawumia has taken the seat now.”

He also dismissed claims that NPP supporters were demonstrating out of frustration.

“They say we are hungry foot soldiers but that's not true,” he said.

“Whatever you do, we are winning and moving forward.”

Another protester claimed many Ghanaians had become dissatisfied with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama.

“The street is disappointed in the NDC,” the protester said.

“The street is disappointed in President Mahama.”

The NPP organised the nationwide demonstration under the theme "Democracy Under Attack," saying the protest was intended to highlight what it describes as growing intimidation of government critics, threats to free expression and concerns over the protection of democratic institutions under the current administration.

The government has, however, rejected the allegations, maintaining that Ghana's democratic principles and constitutional freedoms remain firmly protected.
