REGSEC to demolish structures on waterways at Laboma, Agbogbloshie next week

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is set to begin another round of demolitions next week, targeting structures erected on waterways at Laboma and Agbogbloshie as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding in the capital.

The exercise forms part of a broader flood prevention campaign following the June 29 floods and comes after extensive desilting of drains, clean-up exercises and earlier demolitions carried out in affected communities.

Speaking after inspecting selected Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, said the government remains determined to reclaim waterways and remove illegal structures obstructing the natural flow of water.

She explained that the planned demolitions are aimed at restoring buffer zones, improving drainage systems and reducing the risk of future flooding across the region.

“We have noticed that a lot of the buildings must come down and so we will do a major demolition over there, hopefully next week. We want to create the buffer like we said. We can see that the refuse was caused by the squatters over there. Once we clear the place, we wouldn’t have issues there,” she said.

Mrs Ocloo stressed that the government will continue enforcing planning regulations to prevent encroachment on waterways, insisting that clearing illegal structures remains essential to addressing Accra's perennial flooding challenges.
