The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to launch an immediate investigation into the violent incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), with a commitment to sanction all persons found responsible.
The directive follows an attack on the school’s headteacher and the destruction of school property after students allegedly accused him of burying a baby on the school compound.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, and signed by Deputy Minister for Education Clement Apaak, the Ministry condemned the incident, describing the actions as criminal, unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of Ghana’s educational system.
“The Ministry considers this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such conduct has no place within Ghana’s educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the statement said.
The Ministry said the investigation and any disciplinary action arising from it must follow the laws and regulations governing the education sector.
It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting discipline in schools, stressing that a well-regulated environment remains essential for effective teaching and learning.
The Ministry also assured the public that it would collaborate with the GES and other relevant institutions to protect students, safeguard school authorities and maintain safe learning environments across the country.
The incident reportedly occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. after a student claimed to have spotted the headteacher’s vehicle near the school’s refuse dump. The student allegedly raised an alarm, attracting other students to the area, where they were said to have discovered the body of a baby believed to be between five and six months old.
Following the discovery, the students allegedly confronted the headteacher, leading to an assault on him and the vandalisation of school property.
The headteacher sustained multiple injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
