Fire destroys part of late Murtala Mohammed’s family house in Tamale

A fire outbreak has destroyed a significant portion of the family home of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed, after engulfing the property on Wednesday, August 5.

The blaze ravaged nine of the 17 rooms in the house before firefighters succeeded in bringing it under control.

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), ADO I Hudu Baba, said the Service received a distress call at 3:29 p.m., with fire officers arriving at the scene eight minutes later, at 3:37 p.m.

Speaking to Channel One News, he disclosed that firefighters rescued two schoolchildren who had become trapped inside one of the rooms before intensifying efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

He added that investigations have commenced to establish the cause of the fire and determine the extent of the damage caused.

Murtala Mohammed was among the eight people who lost their lives in the military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.

The victims were travelling from Accra to the Ashanti Region on an official assignment when the helicopter crashed, killing Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three crew members.
