Six Obuasi SHTS students arrested over attack on headmaster, vandalism

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) suspected of involvement in a violent disturbance that resulted in the assault of the school’s headmaster and the destruction of school property.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 5, after some students accused the headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria, of engaging in alleged ritual activities on the school compound.

Reports indicate that the confrontation began after a student claimed to have spotted the headmaster’s vehicle near the school’s refuse dump and raised an alarm, drawing several students to the area.

The students allegedly discovered what they believed to be the body of a freshly buried baby at the location and subsequently confronted the headmaster, leading to an attack on him.

Mr Zakaria sustained multiple injuries during the assault and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

The police intervened to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating further.

However, some students reportedly went on a rampage, vandalising school property, including items at the headmaster’s bungalow.

The arrested students are assisting with investigations as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify other persons who may have been involved.
