DON'T BURN YOUR HOUSE: The Hidden Cost of Hating People

DONT BURN YOUR HOUSE: The Hidden Cost of Hating People

The great Harry Emerson Fosdick once said: “Hating people is like burning down your own house to get rid of a rat.”

Imagine it. The blazing fire. The mansion you built with your own hands, reduced to ashes.

And the rat? It probably escaped through a hole into another house.

That’s what hate does. We think we are punishing them. But we are the ones left homeless.

Hating people is self-inflicted punishment. The mental stress. Psychosomatic illness. Ulcers. Headaches. Sleeplessness. Loss of appetite. Your peace suffers first.

Let’s unpack Fosdick’s warning.

Here’s What Hate Does To Us

Hate is self-destruction
It’s like holding burning charcoal and threatening to throw it at somebody. You’re the one getting burned. Your blood pressure rises. Your sleep breaks. Your peace is stolen. And the other person may not even know you hate them.

Hate costs more than it solves
You spend energy, time, and health fighting a “rat” while your “house”- your career, your family, your future – is being destroyed in the fire.

Hate blinds you
You cannot build, serve, or lead with a heart in turmoil. Frost said it takes discipline. Hate is undisciplined. As the Ashanti say: “Obiara nni obi akyi”- No one follows another with hatred and still moves forward.

Where We See “House -Burning Today

On Social Media: War-mongering, tribalism, dragging people for clout. We trend hate and call it justice.

In Politics: “It’s our turn.” “They are trouble makers.” We demonize whole groups because of one leader. The nation becomes polarized. It burns.

At Work and School: Office politics. Jealousy. Envy. Sabotage. Gossip. You ruin your reputation trying to ruin someone else’s.

In families: Fights over property, inheritance, child upbringing, career choices. Children grow up in the smoke.

In our Hearts: Holding grudges. Replaying old wounds. You’re the one inhaling your own smoke daily.

The Cost of Hate:
For the Individual: Stress. Bitterness, ulcers, loneliness. You unknowingly put yourself on the wrong road.

For the Community: Developmental projects stall. There’s division, mistrust, and no confidence in each other. Nnoboa dies.

For the Nation: We cannot build a nation that’s divided. We cannot build roads while we are busy burning bridges. A house divided by hate cannot stand to build a nation.

The Way Forward: The Discipline To Let Go: This takes work. It takes discipline.

At Home: Teach children to resolve conflict without fisticuffs. No revenge. If you’re wrong, apologise. Model peace.

Online: Think before you post. Unfollow. Block. Protect your peace. Don’t feed trolls.

In Relationships: Seek resolution, not victory. Apologise when wrong. Unite for a common purpose.

In public Life: Criticise policies, not people. Use words that heal, not hurt.

Spiritual Practice: Integrate prayer, reflection, and counselling. You cannot carry every rat. Some you must simply release.

Replace Hate With Work: Hate is poison. Release it. Channel that energy into building. Fosdick’s cure for hate was purpose.

Hating Vs Accountability: We must hold leaders accountable. But we can do it without hate. You can say “this is wrong” without saying “I wish you dead.”

Hate makes us unjust, even as we fight for justice.

Conclusion
You waste energy hating people. You only get one life. One reputation. One heart. Don’t burn it down chasing rats.

Let’s be the generation that chooses peace over pettiness, and building over bitterness.

So today I ask you: Who do you need to forgive, release, or simply stop fighting? Because a house at peace can build a nation.
