Ga North Assembly explains why it demolished toilet under Pokuase Interchange

The Ga North Municipal Assembly has clarified that the controversial public toilet facility constructed beneath the Pokuase Interchange was not built at the location approved by the Assembly, despite the project having been awarded by the local authority.

The clarification follows public backlash after a viral video showed an incomplete toilet facility at a secluded section beneath the interchange.

Speaking to Citi News, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga North, Akwetey Agbo, explained that the Assembly suspended the project about six months ago after discovering that the contractor had deviated from the approved construction site.

According to him, while the Assembly had approved the construction of a public toilet to address sanitation challenges in the area, the facility was meant to be built at a different location.

He said the Assembly intervened shortly after work commenced when officials realised the contractor had moved the project to an unauthorised site.

“We halted the project over six months ago. Barely three days after work started, we realised the contractor had moved away from the approved site, so we stopped the construction,” Mr Agbo said.

He disclosed that the structure has since been demolished.

Mr Agbo noted that the project was intended to tackle sanitation concerns around the Pokuase Interchange, where the lack of public toilet facilities has forced some road users, traders and residents to resort to open defecation.

“If you look at the whole enclave, we actually need such a facility because people, especially those who operate businesses around the area, use the nearby bushes as a place of convenience. We need to address that,” he said.

The Municipal Chief Executive assured the public that the Assembly still plans to construct a public washroom within the interchange enclave but at a more appropriate and approved location.

“There is a buffer around the enclave, so we are going to put up a public washroom there so that anyone in the area who needs such a facility will have a proper place to ease themselves,” he added.
