From Adult Film to the Senate Floor: Amaranta Hank's Colombia Story

Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, better known by her former stage name Amaranta Hank, has been formally sworn in as a senator in the Colombian Congress, capping one of the most closely watched political transformations in the country's recent history.

Who She Is
Born in Cúcuta, Omaña began her career as a journalist before entering the adult entertainment industry in 2017, a career she left roughly two years later to move into public life. She secured her Senate seat as part of the leftist Historic Pact coalition, President Gustavo Petro's political bloc, which emerged as Colombia's strongest party in the March elections, taking more than 4.4 million votes 22.72 percent of the total Senate vote and 25 of the chamber's seats overall. Omaña placed 23rd on the coalition's closed list and will represent the Norte de Santander region for the 2026–2030 legislative term.

Her political rise did not begin with this election. Months earlier, Omaña and fellow former adult performer Juan Carlos Florián had already generated national debate after being appointed deputy ministers within Colombia's Ministry of Equality under the Petro administration an appointment that drew sharp public commentary well before either sought elected office.

Her Platform
Omaña has built her political identity around advocacy for legal recognition and protection of adult entertainment and sex workers, arguing that women in the sexual economy make a genuine economic contribution to the country and should not face continued stigma or exclusion from public life because of it. Pushing back against critics who questioned her fitness for office, she posed the question directly in a TikTok video, asking why a woman with her professional background should be barred from seeking elected office. Beyond that core issue, she has said her Senate priorities will also include mental health policy and measures to prevent sexual abuse.

Why This Is Being Watched Closely
Omaña's swearing-in lands amid broader debate in Colombia and across Latin America over sex work regulation, stigma, and who gets to hold public office debates that touch on labour rights, public morality, and the boundaries of political rehabilitation. Supporters frame her election as democracy functioning as intended: voters in Norte de Santander chose her platform and record over any objection to her past profession.

Critics, meanwhile, have questioned whether her prior career is compatible with the dignity of legislative office, and some have used her background to attack the broader Historic Pact coalition and Petro's government.

Whatever view one takes, Omaña's Senate seat is now a matter of settled electoral fact rather than speculation, and her legislative record over the coming term on sex-work regulation, mental health policy, and abuse-prevention measures will likely do more to define her political legacy than the career that first made her a public figure.
