MoGCSP, UNFPA collaborates to support survivors of gender-based violence

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are deepening their partnership to improve support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and strengthen social protection initiatives across Ghana.

The renewed commitment emerged during a meeting between the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the UNFPA Country Representative, Dr Wilfred Ochan and the Fund's National Gender Analyst, Selina Owusu, as the two sides reviewed priority areas for collaboration.

A key focus of the discussions was the urgent need to expand access to safe shelters for survivors of domestic violence, in which Dr Ochan said UNFPA is exploring practical ways to support privately managed shelters while working with government institutions to identify and rehabilitate suitable public facilities that can be converted into shelters.

According to him, the long-term success of such facilities will depend on clear ownership, effective management, and strong collaboration among key institutions, including the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and the Ghana Police Service.

He added that UNFPA is ready to partner with the Ministry and other stakeholders to mobilise resources for the rehabilitation and operation of selected shelters, to improve access to protection and support services for survivors of gender-based violence.

Welcoming the continued partnership, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey stressed that ongoing engagements should lead to tangible interventions that address the needs of vulnerable people.

She also called for stronger coordination between government agencies and development partners to improve GBV response systems, particularly in the provision of shelters.

Beyond gender-based violence, the meeting also examined the welfare of older persons. Both parties highlighted the need for increased attention to their healthcare, social protection, and economic well-being, agreeing to sustain collaboration on initiatives that promote the dignity, protection, and quality of life of older persons.
