A coordinated assault in northern Mali
Northern Mali witnessed one of its most intense confrontations of 2026 in early July, when a coalition combining Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Front de Libération de l'Azawad (FLA) launched a large-scale offensive against the Malian army and Russia's Africa Corps. Fighting began around 5:30am on July 4 near Anéfis, targeting a joint FAMa-Africa Corps base, with parallel attempts against Gao, Aguelhok and Sévaré repelled by government forces. Africa Corps claimed the opposing coalition fielded as many as 5,000 fighters and over 1,000 vehicles, figures that, like most operational assessments in this conflict, come exclusively from the allied side and remain unverified independently.
The Tabrichat clash
The fighting reached its peak on July 9, when an allied convoy advancing toward Anéfis through desert terrain east of Tabrichat came under attack from JNIM-FLA elements reinforced after earlier losses. Africa Corps stated that Iyad Ag Ghali, JNIM's overall leader, personally directed the fighting at this stage alongside Alghabass Ag Intalla of the FLA, a claim that has circulated widely but lacks independent corroboration. Unverified reports subsequently suggested Ag Ghali may have been wounded and evacuated southward for treatment, a development that, if confirmed, would mark a significant blow to the Sahel's most durable jihadist coalition.
An unconfirmed claim about Ag Ghali's son
Social media posts circulating around the Tabrichat engagement, including from the France-AfriqueMédia network, identified a fighter named Hamza as Iyad Ag Ghali's only son and attributed to him defiant statements about resisting FAMa and Africa Corps "to the last." It is worth noting that this claim has not been substantiated by established security monitors or independent reporting. Separately, a Malian outlet citing sources from the Russian-linked African Initiative agency referenced a "Hamza Yag Yayd," described as Ag Ghali's son, reportedly present near Kidal in an unrelated report from May. Given the propaganda dimensions of Mali's information war, where both jihadist networks and Russian-aligned channels have strong incentives to shape battlefield narratives, this detail should be treated as unconfirmed pending verification from independent sources.
JNIM-FLA cooperation and the wider Malian crisis
The Anéfis-Tabrichat clashes are best understood within a broader pattern established since April 2026, when JNIM and FLA fighters launched coordinated nationwide attacks that killed Mali's defence minister, Sadio Camara, and briefly seized towns from Kidal and Gao in the north to Bamako and Kati in the south. That earlier offensive exposed the limits of Mali's reliance on Russian Africa Corps mercenaries following the junta's break with Western security partners. JNIM has also shifted tactics in recent months, adopting an economic blockade strategy that cuts major roads and destroys infrastructure such as power lines around Bamako, aiming to strangle the capital rather than seize it outright.
Implications for regional security
The loss of Kidal earlier this year already undermined the junta's claim of reasserting territorial control, and the Tabrichat fighting suggests JNIM and its Tuareg separatist partners retain the capacity to challenge fortified government-Russian positions directly. For Ghana and coastal West African states, the persistence of this JNIM-FLA coalition, and its demonstrated ability to inflict serious losses on Africa Corps, reinforces concerns that Sahelian instability continues to push southward toward the Gulf of Guinea littoral states, a trend regional security services have been monitoring closely.
