The Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana (PAOG) has announced the safe return of a Ghanaian pilgrim, Hajia Alimatu Muntari, who remained in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after the 2026 Hajj due to a serious medical condition.
In a statement issued on Thursday, PAOG said Hajia Alimatu, a native of Walewale, fell ill while performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah and was promptly admitted to a Saudi healthcare facility, where she received specialist medical treatment.
According to the office, she was unable to travel with the main contingent of Ghanaian pilgrims after the conclusion of the Hajj because she had not been medically cleared to fly. In line with established medical protocols and in her best interest, she remained under the care of the attending medical team in Saudi Arabia until doctors declared her fit to travel.
PAOG said following her successful treatment and discharge, the Ghana Hajj Medical Team, working in collaboration with the office, coordinated all arrangements for her safe return to Ghana.
To ensure continuous medical supervision during the journey, specialist general surgeon and member of the Ghana Hajj Medical Team, Dr. Osman Haruna Danamiji, accompanied Hajia Alimatu on the flight back home.
The office confirmed that the pilgrim has since arrived safely in Ghana and has been reunited with her family in stable condition.
PAOG reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of Ghanaian pilgrims throughout the pilgrimage and beyond, stressing that no pilgrim would be left without the necessary medical attention.
The office noted that the successful outcome of the case reflects the dedication and professionalism of the Ghana Hajj Medical Team, whose efforts ensured the pilgrim received continuous care until she was well enough to return home.
The Chairman of the Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana, Alhaji Abdul Rauf Tanko Ibrahim, together with the Board, expressed appreciation to healthcare professionals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their expert medical care and collaboration. The office also thanked all stakeholders whose support contributed to the successful recovery and safe return of the pilgrim.
