The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tano South, Hon. Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong, has handed over fertilizers to the Municipal Department of Food and Agriculture to support farmers across the municipality.
The initiative is aimed at improving agricultural productivity by providing free fertilizers, particularly to young people engaged in farming, to help increase crop yields and strengthen food production within the municipality.
The handing-over ceremony was attended by the MCE, Hon. Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong; the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Abdul Rahman Salam; the Municipal Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Paul Addai; heads of departments and representatives of farmer cooperatives.
In his welcome address, the Municipal Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Paul Addai, received the fertilizers on behalf of the department and expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to promoting agriculture and enhancing food security.
He also commended the Municipal Chief Executive for the support, noting that the intervention would contribute significantly to improving agricultural output and supporting farmers across Tano South.
Mr. Addai explained that the distribution process would be smooth, as farmers had earlier been encouraged to form cooperative groups. He said the arrangement would make it easier to distribute the fertilizers efficiently to registered members of the various farmer groups.
He assured farmers that the department would work closely with the Municipal Assembly to ensure that the inputs were distributed fairly and transparently to the intended beneficiaries.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive praised President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, for their leadership and commitment to advancing agricultural development.
Hon. Frimpong described agriculture as a key pillar of Ghana’s economy and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing farmers with the necessary support and inputs to improve productivity.
He said the distribution of free fertilizers was part of efforts to increase crop yields, strengthen local agriculture and encourage more young people to consider farming as a sustainable livelihood.
The MCE further highlighted several development initiatives planned for the municipality, including the establishment of farmer service centres, construction of a 24-hour economy market, rehabilitation and construction of roads linking farming communities, installation of solar streetlights and other projects aimed at improving living conditions for residents.
He urged the Department of Food and Agriculture and farmer associations to ensure that the fertilizers reached the intended beneficiaries and cautioned against any misuse of the inputs.
Hon. Frimpong subsequently handed over 1,500 bags of fertilizers, comprising 1,000 bags of NPK and 500 bags of urea, to the Municipal Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Paul Addai, for distribution to registered farmer groups across the municipality.
