Former Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Sylvester Tetteh, has accused the government of President John Dramani Mahama of orchestrating what he described as "unfounded arrests" of prominent opposition figures to divert public attention from its governance challenges.

Speaking to journalists at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where NPP communications team member Dennis Edward Aboagye, popularly known as "Miracles", was being held in connection with an alleged GH¢55 million corruption investigation, Mr Tetteh criticised the government's handling of the country's political and economic affairs.

He alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration was using state security institutions to carry out periodic arrests of high-profile individuals as a public relations strategy to shift attention away from what he described as its poor performance.

"They periodically arrest prominent people just to cover up," Mr Tetteh said, arguing that the arrests were intended to distract Ghanaians from what he characterised as the government's failures.

The former legislator also criticised the administration for, in his view, failing to fulfil key campaign promises, including the pledge to ensure automatic employment for newly qualified nurses and teachers. He further referred to the government's handling of the Agenda 111 healthcare infrastructure programme, insisting that greater attention should be given to addressing such national priorities rather than pursuing what he believes are politically motivated investigations.

Mr Tetteh maintained that the NPP would continue rebuilding its structures in opposition and vowed that the party would closely examine the actions of the current administration if it returns to power.

He expressed confidence that the party would complete its reorganisation and, in the future, subject the government's decisions and actions to thorough scrutiny.
