The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has called on persons with disabilities (PWDs) to take proactive measures to safeguard their lives, property and livelihoods during emergencies, particularly floods.
The appeal was made by the Director of NADMO's Gender Department, Madam Rosa Graham, at the annual regional meeting of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities (NAPWD) held in Accra.
Addressing participants, Madam Graham stated the importance of flood preparedness, describing it as a shared responsibility that requires effective planning, public awareness and community support.
She educated participants on essential flood safety measures, outlining the necessary precautions to take before, during and after flooding to minimise risks and protect lives.
Madam Graham stressed that communities could significantly reduce the impact of disasters by planning, staying informed and working together to protect vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities.
She expressed concern about the heightened risks faced by persons with disabilities during emergencies, explaining that mobility, communication and accessibility challenges often make rescue and evacuation efforts more difficult.
The Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Charles Opare, commended NADMO for organising the educational session, describing it as timely and beneficial.
He appealed for strengthened support systems to enhance the safety and well-being of persons with disabilities during emergencies.
As a gesture of appreciation, Mr. Opare, on behalf of the association, presented a wheelchair to NADMO in recognition of its continued commitment to disaster preparedness and public education.
The meeting was held on the theme: "Staying Safe Before, During and After Floods: The Role of Persons with Disabilities in Building Resilience.
