Alban Bagbin made NDC lost election 2016, he is sabotaging Mahama again — NDC's Nii Saka fires

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Nii Saka Allotey, has launched a blistering attack on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, accusing him of undermining President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

His comments follow renewed controversy surrounding Parliament’s passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which criminalises homosexuality and the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities. The law prescribes up to three years in prison for identifying as LGBTQ+ and introduces a mandatory duty to report prohibited acts to the police.

On Tuesday, June 2, Speaker Bagbin called for further engagement between Majority and Minority leaders, expressing unease about the process that led to the bill’s approval.

He said he was surprised the bill was fully passed on Friday, May 29, explaining that he expected Parliament to begin only the consideration stage before adjournment. Given the bill’s sensitivity and intense national debate, Bagbin insisted that broader consultation and consensus were necessary.

During a courtesy call by the Supreme Court’s 150th‑Anniversary Planning Committee on Thursday, June 11, Bagbin dismissed claims of a parliamentary stalemate, adding that the bill could still be revisited even after passage.

Reacting on Hot 93.9FM’s Saturday political show, Nii Saka Allotey — popularly known as Nii Saka Brown — accused the Speaker of deliberately sabotaging the NDC government.

He branded Bagbin a “traitor,” claiming the Speaker contributed to the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 elections and is attempting to repeat history.

“Alban Bagbin is one of the reasons the NDC lost the election in 2016. He criticised Mahama for ‘family and friends’ politics, which the opposition used against us. Now he wants to do the same thing,” Nii Saka fumed.

He questioned why Bagbin would fault Parliament for passing the bill in his absence:

“If he travelled and his Deputy supervised the passage, why is he saying they should have waited for him? Why does he think he is the only sensible person in Parliament?”

Nii Saka added that many party loyalists were unhappy when President Mahama endorsed Bagbin as Speaker.
