Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufa’i, has arrived at the Federal High Court sitting in the state capital for the continuation of proceedings in his ongoing corruption trial. El-Rufa’i arrived at the court accompanied by officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.
The case involves allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and financial misconduct during his tenure as governor. According to the prosecutors, funds were improperly released for projects that were either not executed or were irregularly managed. El-Rufa’i has denied all the charges and maintains his innocence. During today's sitting, the court is expected to continue hearing motions and arguments from both the prosecution and the defence as the case progresses.
Background: How the Case Began
The cases stem from a protracted investigation by the ICPC into El-Rufai's tenure as Governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023, bordering on allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and money laundering. El-Rufa’i was arrested by the Commission on or about February 18, 2026. (Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission)
The ICPC arraigned El-Rufa’i alongside one Joel Adoga before Justice A.I. Aikawa of the Federal High Court, Kaduna Division, on a 10-count charge bordering on abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud. According to the charge sheet marked FHC/KD/73/2026, the former governor is accused of unlawfully receiving multiple sums of money in naira and foreign currencies while serving as a public officer.
Specifically, the ICPC alleged that El-Rufa’i, in September 2020 and January 2023, received the sum of ₦289,826,998.12 on each occasion as severance allowance, far exceeding the legally entitled sum of ₦20,013,245.00, being 300 percent of his annual basic salary.
Beyond the severance claims, the ICPC is also probing a series of foreign currency transactions linked to El-Rufa’i. The commission alleges that the former governor received a total of $817,900 through multiple deposits into a domiciliary account over several years.
The charges relate to alleged conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption, as well as money laundering offences contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and other relevant laws. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A Parallel Case at the State High Court
El-Rufai's legal troubles run on two simultaneous tracks. The ICPC also arraigned El-Rufai before Justice Darius Khobo of Kaduna State High Court 5 on a nine-count charge bordering on alleged advance fee fraud and money laundering. The arraignment followed the amendment of the original charge by the ICPC's prosecution counsel, Dr. Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha, who separated the joint charge earlier filed against El-Rufa’i and his co-defendant, Amadu Sule, after the second defendant was reported to be unavailable on account of a medical condition.
The charges in the State High Court case range from abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud, to conferring undue advantage, among others. Both charges were filed by the ICPC on March 18, 2026.
Bail, Delays, and Political Accusations
The road from arrest to today's sitting has been anything but smooth. Justice Rilwanu Aikawa admitted El-Rufa’i to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum, while ordering that he remain in ICPC custody pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions. Under the conditions, one surety must be a senior civil servant not below Grade Level 15, while the second must be a recognized elder in Kaduna State. The court also directed the sureties to deposit their international passports and restrained the former governor from making public comments on the matter pending the determination of the case.
The court later fixed June 1, 2026 for the hearing of two pre-trial motions filed by El-Rufai's defence, seeking to strike out some documents attached to the charges preferred against the former governor by the ICPC.
Throughout the proceedings, El-Rufai's legal team has not confined itself to the courtroom. His defence counsel, Ukpon Akpan, repeatedly described the continued detention and adjournments as politically motivated, maintaining that the former governor alleged coordinated efforts to damage his reputation and prolong his detention.
A Figure at the Centre of Nigeria's Political Storm
The trial of Nasir El-Rufa’i is not merely a legal proceeding it is a political event of national significance. El-Rufa’i, who served as Federal Capital Territory Minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 2003 to 2007 before becoming Kaduna Governor for two terms, was once a central figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He has since defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as of November 2025 , a move that placed him squarely in the ranks of critics of the Tinubu administration making the timing and nature of his prosecution a subject of intense debate across Nigeria's political class.
Whatever the eventual verdict, the case raises enduring questions about accountability, the independence of anti-corruption agencies, and whether Nigeria's legal processes can be shielded from the gravitational pull of politics.
For now, all eyes remain on the Federal High Court in Kaduna where today, as on many days before it, history and law are being contested in the same room.
