The Greater Accra Regional Chapter of the National Association of Registered Midwives – Ghana (NARM‑GAR) has strongly condemned the assault of a senior staff midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the incident as unacceptable and a threat to the safety of healthcare workers nationwide.
A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a relative of a patient physically attacking and manhandling the midwife while she was performing her professional duties on Tuesday, 2 June 2026. The Association says the act reflects a growing pattern of violence against nurses and midwives across the country.
In a statement, NARM‑GAR expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing that midwives dedicate their lives to safeguarding mothers, newborns, families, and communities—often under difficult and demanding conditions. The Association stressed that no healthcare professional should be subjected to physical assault, intimidation, or verbal abuse while providing essential services.
The leadership warned that the increasing rate of violence in health facilities poses a serious threat to service delivery, staff morale, and patient outcomes.
“Such acts not only endanger the safety and dignity of healthcare workers but also create an atmosphere of fear and trauma that undermines quality healthcare,” the statement noted.
NARM‑GAR declared its solidarity with the assaulted midwife and all healthcare workers who have suffered violence in the line of duty, acknowledging the emotional and psychological toll such incidents impose on victims and their families.
The Association called on the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to publicly condemn the attack and take decisive action to curb the rising trend of workplace violence. It warned that silence from authorities only emboldens perpetrators.
NARM‑GAR further urged a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, stressing that while patients and families have the right to seek clarification or lodge complaints, no grievance justifies the physical assault of a healthcare worker.
The Association outlined key demands, including:
- A full investigation into the incident
- Appropriate legal action against all persons found culpable
- Strengthened security measures in health facilities nationwide
- A national zero‑tolerance policy on workplace violence against healthcare workers
- Enhanced psychological support for victims of abuse and assault
NARM‑GAR reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the safety, dignity, and professional respect of all midwives and healthcare workers.
“An attack on a healthcare provider is an attack on the entire healthcare system,” the statement concluded.
