Man who assaulted midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic to face court on June 8 — GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced that the man who allegedly assaulted a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic will face court on Monday, June 8.

The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday, June 2, while the midwife was enforcing the facility's visiting hours policy.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate condemned the act, describing the attack as unprovoked and reaffirming its support for the victim.

“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm,” the statement said.

The Directorate also commended the Ghana Police Service for swiftly restoring calm and arresting the suspect.

“The accused is scheduled to be arraigned before court on Monday, 8 June 2026. Violence against health workers will not be tolerated,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has also condemned the assault and called for urgent measures to protect nurses and midwives across the country.

In a separate statement signed by GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, the Association described the incident as an “uncultured, unacceptable, and criminal act of violence” against a healthcare professional.

The Association urged health authorities to strengthen security at healthcare facilities through enhanced security presence, stricter visitor management systems, surveillance infrastructure, and rapid response mechanisms to deal with violent incidents.

GRNMA also called on the Ministry of Health, GHS, teaching hospitals and other health sector agencies to develop and enforce a national policy on preventing workplace violence in healthcare settings.
