Health KATH did not turn away emergency patients – GMA clarifies
THU, 04 JUN 2026

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says available information does not suggest that the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) turned away emergency patients during the recent congestion at its Accident and Emergency Centre.

In a statement, the Association said the temporary measures introduced by KATH were aimed at redirecting some patients to other health facilities while hospital authorities managed overcrowding and capacity challenges.

According to the GMA, discussions with hospital management, staff, and a review of explanations provided by the Medical Director indicate that steps were taken to protect patient safety and maintain quality care.

The Association noted that conditions at the Accident and Emergency Centre have improved significantly since the issue emerged.

The GMA also expressed concern about the query letter issued to the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, saying it appeared to create the impression that management had acted wrongly.

While welcoming ongoing engagements between KATH management and the Health Ministry, the Association said the focus should be on improving emergency healthcare delivery rather than assigning blame.
