Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital resumes emergency admissions after congestion-induced suspension

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has resumed the admission of new cases at its Accident and Emergency Centre after a temporary suspension caused by congestion.

The facility had earlier closed the unit to manage pressure on the emergency system.

The situation raised concern among patients and families seeking urgent care, as emergency referrals were temporarily redirected to other health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

Hospital management subsequently worked with regional health authorities to stabilise the system.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, confirmed the resolution in a social media update on Wednesday, June 3, after receiving a briefing from the hospital’s leadership.

“I have just been briefed by the CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital that the facility has fully resumed operations following the temporary congestion experienced at its Accident and Emergency Centre,” he said.

He explained that a coordinated response was quickly activated to prevent disruption to emergency care across the region.

“Yesterday, upon receiving the report, a coordinated intervention was initiated with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate and the leadership of health facilities across the region to redistribute cases and ensure uninterrupted emergency care for patients,” he added.

Dr. Amoakohene noted that the incident highlights the urgent need to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand critical medical services in the Ashanti Region.

He referenced ongoing projects such as the KNUST Medical Centre, the Cath Lab facility at KATH, and other major health infrastructure developments aimed at easing pressure on existing facilities.

According to him, government will in due course provide an update on the operationalisation of key facilities, including the Sewua Regional Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital, as part of broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
