A UK radio station has issued a public apology to King Charles III and its listeners after mistakenly announcing the monarch’s death due to a technical error.
Radio Caroline said the false announcement was triggered when its “Death of a Monarch” protocol—a system all UK stations maintain for royal deaths—was accidentally activated on Tuesday, May 19.
“Due to a computer error at our main studio, the Death of a Monarch procedure… was accidentally activated… mistakenly announcing that HM the King had passed away,” Station Manager Peter Moore said in a statement shared on social media on Wednesday, May 20.
He added that the station immediately went silent, as required under the protocol, which alerted staff to restore normal programming and issue an on‑air apology.
“Caroline has been pleased to broadcast Her Majesty the Queen’s, and now the King’s, Christmas Message, and we hope to do so for many years to come,” Moore noted, before extending an apology “to HM the King and to our listeners for any distress caused.”
Founded in 1964, Radio Caroline broadcasts across several European countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands, and streams globally online.
King Charles Was on Official Duty in Belfast
At the time of the erroneous announcement, King Charles and Queen Camilla were in Belfast, Northern Ireland, attending a cultural celebration at Thompson Dock—the historic site where the Titanic once stood.
The royal couple met performers preparing for the world‑renowned Irish music festival Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, toured a whiskey distillery, and visited a charity promoting digital skills. They later held meetings with Northern Ireland’s First Minister and Deputy First Minister at Hillsborough Castle.
King Charles, 77, revealed in February 2024 that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Buckingham Palace has since said his treatment has been reduced due to positive progress. In recent weeks, he has undertaken several international engagements, including visits to New York, Washington, DC, and an address to UK Parliament.
