The Upper East Region has taken delivery of 550 laptops to support the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), with Regional Minister Donatus Atanga calling for additional training centres to ensure every district benefits from the digital skills initiative.

The laptops were presented on Tuesday at the forecourt of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council as part of the government’s effort to equip young people with coding and digital skills.

Minister Atanga commended President John Dramani Mahama and Communications Minister Sam George for fulfilling the pledge to roll out the programme.

He noted that the region had recently received equipment under the National Apprenticeship Programme and now has devices to support digital training.

“The laptops under the OMCP are to be distributed to 11 centres; however, the region has 15 districts, and we urge the Minister for Communications to consider establishing additional centres so that every district can benefit,” he said.

Mr Atanga advised beneficiaries to use the laptops responsibly and ensure they serve the wider community, and charged Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) coordinators to keep the devices accessible to all interested youth and warned against restricting access.

GIFEC’s Upper East Regional Manager, Martin Aberba, said the programme aims to bridge the digital divide by extending ICT infrastructure to underserved communities as well as train one million young Ghanaians in coding, software development, and other digital skills within two years.

He said, “The initiative will create opportunities for young people to work as freelance web developers, mobile app testers, and software support assistants without migrating to urban areas.”

He added that the programme will provide a structured pathway into the digital economy, including internships and job placements with partner technology firms.

The laptops will be deployed to selected Senior High Schools, community ICT centres, and youth skills centres across the region.
