The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) has officially launched the 24-Hour Economy Market Project with the signing of contracts at a ceremony held at its Conference Room on Thursday April 30, 2026.
The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, signed the contracts on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, marking the official commencement of the initiative. The project is scheduled to begin in May and will be rolled out across all eighteen Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Volta Region.
The 24-Hour Economy Market Project forms part of the government’s broader national agenda to stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and promote inclusive growth. Hon. Gunu described it as a bold and strategic step toward transforming local economies. “The 24-hour economy is not just a policy direction; it is a practical pathway to job creation, increased productivity, and inclusive economic growth,” he said.
The Regional Minister noted that the signing marks the region’s readiness to move from policy to implementation. He explained that the market projects will modernize trading spaces, improve infrastructure, and create opportunities for traders, artisans, and young people to engage in round-the-clock economic activities.
Hon. Gunu urged all stakeholders, including contractors, assemblies, and community leaders, to uphold transparency, maintain high construction standards, and strictly adhere to project timelines. He stressed that the success of the initiative depends on collective commitment and accountability at every level.
Chief Director of the VRCC, Alhaji Mohammed Avona Akape, also described the project as a forward-looking intervention that will significantly improve market operations across the region. He assured that the VRCC, working with the MMDAs, will ensure effective implementation and delivery of the project’s objectives.
He expressed hope that the Volta Region would serve as a model for the 24-hour economy agenda in Ghana. “Let us work together to make the Volta Region a shining example of what this policy can achieve,” he stated.
The ceremony brought together consultants, contractors, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, party executives, heads of departments, traditional council representatives, and members of the media. Officials said the event marks a key milestone in aligning the region with the government’s vision of building a resilient and vibrant 24-hour economy.
Hon. Gunu thanked all invited guests, heads of institutions, coordinating directors, and the media for their dedication and participation in advancing the region’s economic development agenda.
