Switzerland has described Morocco's autonomy initiative for the Moroccan Sahara as the most serious, credible and pragmatic basis for resolving the long‑standing regional dispute.
The position was contained in a Joint Communication adopted on Friday by Mr Ignazio Cassis, Federal Councillor, Vice‑President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and Mr Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, during the latter's working visit to Bern.
In the document, Switzerland welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent the most feasible solution to the issue.
The Swiss Government also reaffirmed its support for the central role of the United Nations in the political process, as well as the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary‑General aimed at achieving a lasting political settlement.
Switzerland's renewed endorsement of Morocco's autonomy proposal aligns with a growing international momentum in support of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and the autonomy initiative put forward by the Kingdom.
