President John Dramani Mahama has given assurance that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital will be completed by November 2027, a move expected to ease pressure on healthcare delivery in Accra.
During an inspection of the project site on Friday, April 24, the President expressed satisfaction with the steady progress of work, commending the contractor and workers for the pace achieved so far.
He stressed that government is committed to preventing any further delays, noting that measures are in place to ensure the project is delivered within the revised timeline.
President Mahama underscored the importance of the facility, explaining that its demolition created a major gap in healthcare services, leaving many residents without access to essential medical care.
He added that the new hospital will introduce about 160 additional beds, which will help address ongoing challenges where patients struggle to secure admission, especially in emergency situations.
“The hospital is progressing quite well, and we want to make sure that it doesn’t stall and that it continues and is delivered on the due date. The contractor assures us that by November 2027, we should be able to commission this hospital. As the minister said, this hospital is important because, since it was demolished, it was no longer serving patients,” he said.
The project, which was initially awarded in 2020, experienced setbacks due to funding constraints. However, the President assured that financing issues have been resolved and that funds will be released consistently to accelerate completion.
