Uganda's opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has revealed that his secret hiding and subsequent exit from the country last Saturday were assisted by various entities, including elements within the Ugandan security system.
This development confirms the ongoing public narrative that his National Unity Platform (NUP) party may be a government project aimed at preventing the emergence of a serious political formation to challenge for power.
In a video posted on his official social media platforms, Kyagulanyi thanked security agents for helping him hide from his pursuers and appreciated members of the public who provided necessary support, including prayers from religious groups and civil society organizations. He credited these efforts for enabling his recent successful escape from Uganda.
Although Kyagulanyi didn't reveal his current location, other videos showed him departing from an airport in Rwanda and arriving at another in South Africa. All these regional immigration protocols are accessible to the Ugandan security system. Kyagulanyi promised to return to Uganda soon and has delegated party leadership to one of his female deputies, Dr. Zedriga, who is currently on trial for electoral-related crimes.
Given these developments, it's likely that NUP may not genuinely represent opposition interests. Any engagements with the party should be conducted with this context in mind.
