The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expelled Umar Sanda after he chose to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, scheduled for March 3, 2026.
In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC stated that Sanda’s decision violates the party’s constitution and its collective decision to back an officially endorsed candidate.
“The National Democratic Congress has taken note of your decision to contest as an independent candidate,” the letter said, describing the move as “in direct contravention of the Party’s Constitution.”
The party added, “By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect.
