Ghana Health Service (GHS) is cautioning the public not to be deceived by recent rainfall, stressing that the harmattan season is still ahead and poses significant health risks.

According to the Ghana Health Service, the dry, dusty winds associated with harmattan sharply increase the likelihood of dehydration, respiratory illnesses, skin problems and other seasonal conditions.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director-General, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, it noted that the low humidity strips moisture from the skin, causing dryness and cracking, while the body loses water more rapidly, leading to dehydration if fluid intake is not increased.

The heavy dust in the atmosphere remains a major concern, particularly for people with asthma or respiratory complications, as it can worsen symptoms or trigger infections. The eyes are equally vulnerable, with reduced humidity and persistent dust causing irritation and raising the risk of infection.

Authorities further warn that the harmattan period overlaps with a seasonal spike in meningitis cases, as Ghana lies within Africa’s “meningitis belt,” where dry conditions favour the spread of the disease.

To reduce the health risks, the ministry is advising the public to moisturise regularly with oil-based products such as shea butter, drink plenty of water, and consume fruits and soups that aid hydration. People are encouraged to wear masks in dusty environments, cut down on outdoor activity if they have respiratory issues, and use sunglasses or protective eyewear to shield their eyes.

Regular handwashing and avoiding frequent contact with the face also remain important preventive measures. Health officials urge anyone experiencing symptoms of illness to seek medical attention without delay.

The Ghana Health Service said it is committed to safeguarding public health and is urging Ghanaians to take the harmattan warnings seriously as the season approaches.
