Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has launched a major enforcement operation in Kasoa, leading to the disconnection of Standard Water Company and several other businesses after uncovering extensive illegal water connections in the Awutu Senya East municipality.

The operation, carried out with support from National Security personnel, exposed sophisticated methods used by individuals and companies to divert water without paying for it. Investigators discovered that Standard Water and another sachet water company had secretly installed bypass lines that allowed them to consume large volumes of water without any metering.

The team also found a ten-bedroom house equipped with a massive underground tank used to store illegally obtained water, further revealing the scale of the theft.

According to GWL officials, the companies exploited the system by applying for domestic water meters meant for households, then unlawfully altering the pipelines. By replacing standard connections with large two-inch pipes, they siphoned commercial-level volumes of water while avoiding the appropriate charges.

Accra West Regional Communications Manager, Solace Akomeah, expressed deep concern about the extent of the illegal activity. She described the situation in Kasoa as alarming, noting that such widespread theft undermines fair water distribution and puts honest consumers at a disadvantage.

She warned that anyone caught stealing water will face surcharges and possible prosecution as part of GWL’s strict stance against utility fraud.

The ongoing crackdown is part of GWL’s broader effort to improve water supply reliability and protect the integrity of the distribution system.

The company is urging residents to join the fight by reporting suspected illegal connections, meter bypassing, or water theft to GWL or security agencies.

Ms. Akomeah emphasized that community cooperation is essential to ensuring a stable and equitable water supply for all.
