Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. will officially reopen this Thursday after being temporarily closed due to a probe into alleged corruption, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.
The closure, which sparked both national and international interest, followed a directive from the Minister for Foreign Affairs as part of a broader initiative to confront misconduct and reestablish discipline across Ghana’s diplomatic missions.
Speaking to the press, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye, MP for Ablekuma South and a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, applauded the Minister's decisive intervention.
“We support the Foreign Minister’s decision to shut down the embassy while taking steps to deal with the misconduct. It clearly shows the government’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption, even beyond our borders,” he said.
With the reopening, the embassy is expected to operate under a new framework focused on transparency, integrity, and enhanced public service. Officials say a series of reforms have been introduced to strengthen accountability and ensure effective oversight.
The Majority Caucus of the Foreign Affairs Committee welcomed the changes, describing the reopening as a pivotal moment for Ghana’s foreign service.
“This is more than a reopening—it marks a new chapter in how we conduct diplomacy. It’s about rebuilding trust, raising standards, and showing the world that Ghana takes governance seriously,” the Committee stated.
