The Yamfo Youth Development Association in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to investigate a recent police operation that allegedly led to the death of a healthcare worker, Richard Agyei Antwi.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, April 5, reportedly involved a violent confrontation between some youth in Yamfo and officers from the Formed Police Unit of the Duayaw Nkwanta Police Command.
Tensions excalated in the aftermath, leading to the vandalism of the Yamfo Police Station which prompted a military deployment from Sunyani to calm the situation.
In a petition dated April 8 and sighted by ModernGhana News, the association described the incident as a “tragic and unjustified killing,” questioning why personnel from the Duayaw Nkwanta Division had entered Yamfo, which falls outside their jurisdiction.
“I am compelled to express my extreme disappointment and disillusionment with the recent operation undertaken by personnel from the Formed Police Unit of the Duayaw Nkwanta Police, which tragically resulted in the brutalization and death of a healthcare worker in Yamfo,” the Chairman of the Association, Nana Gyamfi Kumanim Asare stated.
He added that the association wants the IGP to act swiftly by launching a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Antwi’s death.
“We respectfully request that you address our concerns… with a view to providing full assurance to the public of an improved policing environment,” the petition stated.
