The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. George Opare Addo Esq, has inaugurated a technical working committee to lead the implementation of the Adwumawura and National Apprenticeship Programmes.
These initiatives aim to tackle youth unemployment and will be carried out under the ministry’s supervision, with NEIP and NYA overseeing execution.
At the inauguration held at the ministry’s conference room, Hon. George Opare Addo Esq emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping young people with the skills and resources needed for self-employment. He described the Adwumawura Programme as a major step towards empowering 10,000 young Ghanaians aged 18 to 35 by supporting them in launching and growing their businesses.
“This initiative reflects the NDC government’s dedication, under the leadership of H.E. John Mahama, to providing real opportunities for the youth. We are ensuring they receive training, financing, and mentorship to turn their business ideas into reality,” he said.
The programme will focus on small-scale manufacturing, agribusiness, AI, and fintech. The committee has been tasked with creating strategies to support these start-ups, addressing taxation and regulatory challenges, and ensuring their integration into the 24-hour economy policy. Hon. George Opare Addo Esq urged the committee to submit a detailed report within two weeks ahead of the national launch on April 23, 2025.
He also highlighted the National Apprenticeship Programme, which offers free technical and vocational training to equip young people with practical skills. Successful apprentices will receive certification, start-up capital, and necessary equipment to establish their businesses.
“The goal is to move beyond training and ensure these young people have everything they need to succeed in business,” he said.
The committee is expected to review the National Apprenticeship Policy, assess market needs, and develop a strategy that includes mentorship and long-term growth plans. Their report is also due in two weeks, ahead of the official launch on April 30, 2025.
A dedicated secretariat will be established at the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to oversee the coordination of both programmes. Hon. George Opare Addo Esq called on all stakeholders to collaborate in expanding employment opportunities and building a stronger economy.
