Produce evidence or shut up — FDAG slams group making allegations against VRA, Kenzo

The Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG) has dismissed allegations against the Volta River Authority (VRA) and its Acting CEO, Ing. Edward Obeng-Kenzo, stating that an independent investigation found no evidence to support claims of discrimination, emotional instability, or any form of misconduct.

In a statement issued on Thursday, FDAG’s Senior Research Fellow, Nana Kojo Abbam, affirmed that their findings, based on a thorough review of the allegations, showed that Ing. Obeng-Kenzo has upheld professionalism, inclusivity, and transparency throughout his tenure.

“We discovered that Ing. Obeng-Kenzo has always upheld professionalism, fairness, and inclusivity at VRA,” the statement noted.

The organization emphasized that throughout his leadership, Obeng-Kenzo has fostered a harmonious work environment, prioritizing merit and capability over political considerations. It also highlighted his impressive track record in Ghana’s energy sector, noting that he has championed major renewable energy projects, including the Kaleo Solar Power Plant and the Anwomaso Thermal Power Station.

“These initiatives have played a pivotal role in diversifying Ghana’s energy mix, making it more resilient and environmentally responsible. Under his distinguished leadership, the operational efficiency of the Volta River Authority (VRA) saw visible improvements. Ing. Obeng-Kenzo's focus on optimizing VRA's thermal generation capacity and streamlining operational processes has translated into enhanced productivity and a more robust energy sector," the statement stressed.

FDAG categorically rejected accusations made by the NVF, which had alleged that Obeng-Kenzo engaged in discriminatory practices, used divide-and-rule tactics, and displayed emotional instability. The civil society organization dismissed these claims as baseless, asserting that his leadership style has been inclusive, ensuring that all staff—regardless of rank or political affiliation—are treated equitably.

"Ing. Obeng-Kenzo has always been an advocate of teamwork and unity," the statement read.

"His leadership style is inclusive, ensuring that all staff—both junior and senior—have a voice in VRA’s operations. His approach to engaging different staff groups separately was to understand their specific concerns, not to create division."

FDAG’s investigations, which included interviews with VRA staff members, revealed that employees had never experienced discrimination under Obeng-Kenzo’s leadership. Instead, they described a workplace that encouraged teamwork, respect, and open communication.

Addressing accusations of emotional instability, FDAG dismissed the claim as absurd and unfounded, questioning the NVF’s authority to make psychological assessments.

"Since when did the group (NVF) become certified psychologists capable of diagnosing emotional instability? Are they now running a psychiatric evaluation unit alongside their anti-corruption campaign?" the statement remarked. “This preposterous claim will be treated with the contempt it deserves.”

FDAG further reminded the public that Obeng-Kenzo is a seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in Ghana’s energy sector, managing large-scale projects and leading thousands of employees. The organization pointed to his calm and strategic decision-making as a testament to his leadership capacity and ability to handle high-pressure situations.

FDAG urged the public to disregard the politically motivated attacks against Ing. Obeng-Kenzo and instead focus on his significant contributions to Ghana’s energy sector.

“Ing. Obeng-Kenzo has proven himself as a leader who combines technical expertise, strategic foresight, and an unyielding commitment to the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s energy sector,” FDAG stated.

The organization reiterated its commitment to promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability, assuring Ghanaians that it would continue to advocate for truth and integrity in the face of baseless political attacks.
