CETAG suspends strike as Mahama government migrates them onto University Salary Structure

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has officially suspended its three-week-long industrial action following a decision made by its National Council during a virtual meeting on Friday, January 24, 2025.

The decision to suspend the strike comes after significant progress in negotiations, particularly the migration of staff in the Colleges of Education onto the University Salary Structure by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), an important step towards fulfilling the National Labour Commission’s Arbitration Awards.

CETAG noted that the recent appointment of a new Minister of Education, who has shown a strong commitment to addressing the concerns of the association, played a significant role in their decision. The leadership also recognized the adverse impact the strike was having on students and the broader college community, further motivating their choice to return to work.

Despite the suspension, CETAG has highlighted that several critical issues remain unresolved. Among them are the compensation for additional work done in 2022 for the remaining 42 colleges, the payment of arrears for the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance, and the settlement of BRA Top-Up arrears owed to deserving staff at Akrokerri College of Education. The association also expressed concerns over the non-migration and improper placement of some members on the newly implemented salary structure.

In a statement, CETAG leadership expressed their deep appreciation to members for their resilience and unwavering support throughout the industrial action. They urged members to resume work immediately, assuring them that ongoing negotiations would continue to prioritize their interests. CETAG pledged to work tirelessly to address all outstanding issues, promising to secure satisfactory outcomes for every member.

As members prepare to return to work, CETAG emphasized its commitment to ensuring lasting industrial peace while advocating for better conditions within the Colleges of Education. The association remains hopeful that its ongoing engagements with the relevant authorities will result in meaningful progress for all stakeholders.
