Senior Political Science professor at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has reacted to the decision by President John Dramani Mahama to consolidate some Ministries in order to reduce the number of Ministries from 30 to 23.
According to him, this is a great step that will help the President to achieve his promise of governing the country with just 60 Ministers.
In a post on Facebook, Prof. Ransford Gyampo admonished President John Dramani Mahama not to allow none Members of Parliament who will be appointed Ministers to have any deputies.
He believes such Ministers will have enough time on their hands to execute their tasks.
“Reducing Ministries from 30 to 23 is a great step towards achieving the promise to have only 60 Ministers. Let only MPs who are Ministers have Deputies. Ministers who aren’t MPs must have no Deputies, as they would have enough time,” Prof. Ransford Gyampo said on Saturday, January 11.
President John Dramani Mahama in his election campaign assured Ghanaians of his plan to run a lean government.
Many believe cutting down the number of Ministries is the right step towards fulfilling that promise.

To effectively achieve a lean government and less expenditure, no minister should have deputies. All ministries in Ghana do have civil servants (principal secretaries) who can serve the same purposes better and less costly than deputy ministers. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah achieved a lot with a total of nine (9) ministers. Avoid the duplication of functions and costs. God bless President Mahama for thinking straight!
