The Ghana Police Service has unveiled a series of security measures to ensure the safety of journalists during the upcoming December general elections.
Among these initiatives is the introduction of liaison officers for media houses nationwide, serving as direct links between the Police and media establishments.
This announcement was made by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, during a stakeholder engagement held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, 20th November 2024. The event brought together senior journalists, news editors, and the Police leadership to discuss collaborative strategies for a peaceful and secure electoral process.
Dr Dampare emphasized the crucial role of the media as a key stakeholder in the elections and stressed the importance of providing protection and support to ensure they fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
As part of the measures, the Police Service has established a toll-free contact line in collaboration with telecommunications companies. This line will enable the public to share real-time information with the Police during the election period, further enhancing security and responsiveness.
The IGP encouraged journalists to maintain high standards of accuracy in their reporting and to avoid misinformation or disinformation that could jeopardize national stability. He highlighted the media's influence in shaping public discourse and urged practitioners to contribute positively to the country’s democratic process.
Dr. Dampare also called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to make the 2024 elections a milestone in Ghana’s democratic history, marked by peace, security, and order.
He expressed confidence that the measures being implemented will allow journalists to work without fear and demonstrate Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability.
This initiative is part of the Police Service’s broader commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for media personnel as they cover the elections across the country.
